All Things Irish 2012: Day 2

“Luck of the Irish!” That’s how the saying goes, right?  Well, even though I’m not a full blooded Irish lass, I seem to have been lucky enough to get a full dose of traditional Irish looks (red hair, pale skin, freckles), and my fair share of luck too.

For instance, I’m lucky enough to get to treat myself tomorrow to a mani/pedi and I’m planning on something St. Patty’s themed. Any fun ideas to “Irish” up my nails? Let me know in the comments! Here are some things I found around the interwebs:

1. From Mad Manis

Emerald Green with a bit of Leprechaun Gold and some Pretty Shamrocks

2. From Vampy Varnish

I prefer lighter colors on my finger nails, and this frothy mint color looks just like a yummy shamrock shake!

3. Dark Emerald and a White Clover

Definitely could do something like this for the pedicure.

I’ve also been lucky enough to win some lovely prizes in blog contests. I’ve mentioned before that Veronika’s Kandy Koated Dreams hosts some of the best giveaways ever, and St. Patty’s Day is no exception. Check out her awesome Giveaway of All Things Irish! You could score some really sweet stuff, including:

Did you notice the MAC nail polish that's included? You can give yourself a great St. Patty's Mani/Pedi too!

So, are you feelin lucky? Go comment on Veronika’s post HERE for your chance to win the whole pot of loot! It’s worth a visit just to see how she proves that freckles can be sexy. Contest closes Friday, March 9th at Midnight (FYI – she’s on Texas time).

See  you tomorrow for Day 3!

2nd Annual 17 Days of All Things IRISH

Happy March! If there’s one thing to celebrate today, it’s that another February has gone away (actually, compared to Feb of 2011, this Feb wasn’t so bad).

March means spring and green! Green means…St. Patrick’s day! The one day everybody suddenly remembers they have a wee bit of Irish in them.

Last year I started the annual tradition of posting all kinds of St. Patty’s themed stuff from March 1st – 17th. I didn’t quite make it to 17, but I didn’t do too bad for my first attempt, and since I did say “annual” I’m back again to give it another go with all new stuff! If you missed the fun last year, you can check out the first annual posts HERE, or just click on the tag ALL THINGS IRISH from the tag cloud on the left sidebar.

Today we’ll start with something sweet and simple that I found while indulging in my latest addiction – Pinterest. One of my favorite Pinners – Pam from Over the Big Moon, pinned this fun little printable, courtesy of A House Full of Moxie:

How cute and easy! Get the free printable at Moxie’s website (you’ll see it in the right sidebar).

Take the kids to the bank and cash in a $1 for 100 of the shiniest pennies the bank teller will give you. Then let them have a blast passing out a little bit of luck to all their friends on St. Patty’s Day!

Now that you’ve a bit of luck in your pocket, I hope the days leading up to the 17th keep you smiling!

Oh, and if you can’t wait to see what else is in store for the 2nd Annual 17 Days of All Things Irish, then check out my ALL THINGS IRISH pin board. You can bet a few things will be hopping on over here from there! (And that’s a bet you’ll win, lucky or not!)

Friday Fast Five: Almost February

The last weekend of January 2012 is rolling in…and while I cannot believe it’s almost time to say goodbye to a WHOLE dang month of 2012 already, I am looking forward to what is coming next (and hopefully it’s not a blizzard of epic proportions like we had LAST Feb 1st).

No, I’m talking about the only thing that pretty much saves February from being absolutely blech.  Valentine’s Day. I won’t get into how much I still enjoy all the pink pomp and circumstance of this pseudo-holiday, I’ll save that for another post. But as part of this Friday’s Fast Five – I will share a few Valentine-related bits for you.

1. Veronika’s Kandy Koated Dreams (she of the most awesome giveaway I ever had the luck to win) is hosting a lovely Valentine’s Day giveaway over on her blog right now.  Enter soon because it ends when February starts. (That means the contest closes on Feb 1st, if you can’t follow my word play).  From her contest post, here is what her Giveaway includes:

2. I am not ashamed to admit my addiction to Pinterest – it started sometime early last Fall and has been growing steadily ever since…and the fever is spreading because recently there has been an explosion of friends (personal and social media alike) that have discovered this incredibly wonderful little website. I may need to ask the husband to create some kind of Pinterest app that controls how long I get to play on there each day – maybe something that after 20 minutes it kicks me off and won’t let me go back on for 12 hours, (that’s probably as long as I could stay away!). Are you on Pinterest? Check out my pin boards and let’s enable each other’s addiction! (Confession: I totally found most of my ideas for this year’s Valentine’s cards, gifts, and treats on Pinterest!)

3. Sometimes it is SO hard to find the motivation to work out. Here are some tricks I have been using this month to help me stick to it:

  • A little is better than none. On crazy busy days I try and sneak in a quick 20-30 minutes at the gym. I know I won’t get a whole lot done, but if I manage to run 2 or 3 miles than I’ve squeezed in a workout where I otherwise might not have done so.
  • Make it a regularly scheduled activity. So many things on my calendar are routine and I know I have to do this and be there, etc. So why not have the same expectation for my workouts? I may not always feel like going to Spin class on Friday mornings – but there it is on my Google calendar, and since it’s there I will tend to plan around it rather than over and through it. Also: Spin is hard, sometimes I really hate it. BUT – the other day the husband was admiring my quad muscles, and I know I have those hard hours on the spin bike to thank.
  • Speaking of admiration…I am lucky to have a husband who is generous with the compliments. After a week of seeing me in nothing but workout clothes, over the weekend I tried to wear something I thought he would like – my efforts were rewarded. He complimented me all day long  – to the point Miss A was getting embarrassed! 😉  Makes me want to keep working hard to look good (though that also means he will have to keep seeing me in the workout clothes…sorry babe.)

4. On the subject of scheduling time to do things – I have also started blocking WRITING TIME on my Google calendar for the same reason. If I give it the importance of a “REAL” commitment, I am more likely to follow through and less likely to schedule something else on top of it. Are you a writer? Aspiring to get that novel published? You should enter the Fire & Ice Contest sponsored by Chicago North chapter of RWA. You get 2 judges in pre-lims (at least one of them is pubbed) and all final judges are agents and editors. The contest deadline was just extended to Feb 5th – so polish up those first 25 pages of your manuscript and send them in! Winners of the contest will be announced at the Chicago North Spring Fling Writer’s Conference at the end of April. (Which you should totally go to – it is going to be an amazing opportunity to improve your craft, network, and pitch your book!)

5. I think I have my talents,  but I am also not ashamed to admit there are skills I simply don’t excel at. That’s why it’s awesome to have friends who are talented at doing things I suck at…like sewing. My college roomie has MADSKILLZ with a crochet hook (it’s a hook, right? Not a needle?) Check out this Hello Kitty hat she made for Lil’ G:

After much nagging and being told of her awesomeness, she finally put together a “shop” of sorts, and is taking orders for her hand made hats. Check out more of her amazingly cute hats at Wendella’s Handiwork.

Mental Vacation

It’s Monday…need I say more? OK…here in the MidWest it’s that nasty “Wintry Mix” weather outside today. You know, that stuff that sounds like a tasty snack but is actually disgusting slush that is extremely unpleasant to walk through. Also, on the family agenda tonight – shopping for new cell phones. (Visiting the phone store w/children in tow has to be a circle in hell, maybe 2 circles: 1 for the parents, and another for the other customers who can’t stand my noisy-touch-everything-in-sight kids). On days like today, I’d love to just curl up with a book and take a mental vacation…even for a few minutes. Now I’m thinking about books and vacation and remembering how delicious it is to sit in the sun, out by the lake with a good book and no schedule – oh, man – now I REALLY need that mental vacation!

I’ve hooked Miss A on the reading = escape equation. She is always snuggling up in my papasan for some reading time, and here she is from this past summer, indulging in one of my favorite vacation activities:

Like Mama, like daughter 🙂

Hope you find a few minutes this Monday to take your own mental vacation!

The Little Things Are Key

It’s a new year, a new day – a fresh start, a blank page. Whether you have made resolutions or simply resolve never to make resolutions – may 2012 bring happiness to your life.

Personally I have big plans for 2012, my calendar is full of major goals and lots of good intentions…but above all I hope to teach myself to enjoy the next 366 days (it’s a Leap Year y’all) and cherish each day and what it brings in and of themselves, for they will be gone too fast. Those little day to day things…they are the key to happiness.

Star Wars Christmas Day 3: Scenes

I have so many favorite scenes across all six movies in the Star Wars saga (though I admit that most are from the films of my childhood: Episodes IV – V – VI).

Some moments from A New Hope include:

  • The bit when Luke watches Leia’s message to Obi-Wan via R2-D2
  • The garbage compactor scene: “Into the garbage chute, fly boy!”
  • Luke & Leia’s  infamous “Swing to Freedom” when she gives him a swift kiss, “For luck.”
  • And the Mos Eisley cantina scene.
This is a 2012 release from Hallmark. My mother-in-law got it for me as a birthday present…I am so lucky!

Why do I love this scene? Because it shows the calm, cool, collected, don’t F with me bad a**ness  that is Han Solo.  It also makes those little moments when we see a softer side of him all the more sweet.  (And it does such a nice job establishing him as Luke’s foil – all my fellow Lit people know what I’m sayin’).Aside from that, the scene ends on such a great line…(who can quote it?)

Apparently, there has been some controversy over this scene, as in later editions, George Lucas modified it so Greedo fires his weapon first. Personally, I don’t care that Han shoots first, in fact – I prefer it.  Like I said, when we first meet him he’s a smuggler, an unapologetic bad boy – a scoundrel. Greedo isn’t sitting down for a nice friendly chat over a beer…trying to make it seem like Han only acted in self-defense takes a bit of that tough guy persona away.

Moving on….favorite Scenes from Empire Strikes Back include:

  • The almost-kiss between Leia and Han on Hoth.
  • Yoda and R2-D2 squabbling like toddlers on Dagobah.
  • The moment on Bespin when Leia tells Han she loves him (and his response? C’mon, you know the answer to this one!)
  • And of course…one of the most famous moments in film history…when Luke learns just who his Daddy was.

A few favorites from Return of the Jedi:

So many great moments in this movie are a result of what could almost be called an inside joke…scenes that are re-worked bits from the first two movies such as:

  • Luke & Leia once again swing to freedom together.
  • Han tells Leia he loves her, she responds the way he did in Empire.
  • Everyone has  “a bad feeling about this” and “delusions of grandeur.”

Other memorable scenes include:

  • When Luke learns Leia is his sister, and then tells her the truth out on the rope bridge in the Ewok village.
  • When Threepio is worshiped as the God of the Ewoks, and Han isn’t too happy about being the main course in the new deity’s celebration meal.
  • When Luke saves Vader from himself, and looks upon his father’s true face.

Any of these moments immortalized in Christmas ornament form would be on my “must-buy” list…so if someone over at Hallmark is paying attention…get going on that, ok?

Star Wars Christmas Day 4: Vehicles

There are so many iconic spaceships and speeders and….things that fly…in the Star Wars movies. This year Hallmark released a new ornament for the Slave 1 (that’s bounty hunter Bobba Fett’s ship – in case you didn’t know). I still have the 2002 Hallmark Slave 1 ornament on my Wish List. Currently the two are within $1 of each other, and 2011’s version seems more intricate and finely detailed, plus it includes sound effects. I’m hoping to pick up the ’11 Slave 1 at a significant discount after Christmas – so leave one on the shelf for me, ok?

As far as vehicle ornaments that currently float on my Star Wars Christmas tree branches, my favorite is the TIE fighter. (Bonus points if you can tell me what TIE stands for).

I have two TIE fighters on my tree, the above image is of what is really just a scaled-down version of a model Tie Fighter – its detailing is quite intricate – but it doesn’t have any of the fun extras many vehicle ornaments usually include. My other TIE is Darth Vader’s personal TIE ship that he uses to try and take out Luke in the big air battle scene of A New Hope. This one is fun – it lights up and if you look close, you can see the Dark Lord of the Sith sitting pretty in the cock pit.

Raise your hand if you remember the moment when Darth is flying with his team of Tie Fighters, and says (about Luke, who he’s tracking) “I have you now.”

Who can tell me what happens next?

Star Wars Christmas Day 5: Sidekicks

The Star Wars series includes several characters that qualify for the label of “sidekick” – yet despite their second-billing, these Wookies and Droids are interesting and funny and their presence is vital to the story.  Which is why there is plenty of room on the Star Wars tree for them.

First up is Han Solo’s co-pilot and all around good buddy. He doesn’t shave or wear pants – but that doesn’t stop Chewbacca from being 7+ feet of awesome.

Another sidekick, Protocol Droid C3-PO as pictured (in pieces) above, is one-half of the legendary robotic duo from the SW series. The yin to Threepio’s yang is the short, snarky, and steadfastly loyal R2-D2.

Artoo has always been a personal favorite of mine. I find it amazing how much personality is packed into that stout little barrel who only communicates through beeps and whistles. Artoo saves the day at least once in every episode of the saga, which I say could elevate him to hero status…but he’s happy sticking with playing the sidekick role, as long as it leaves him free to annoy the hell out of Threepio.

Star Wars Christmas Day 6: Villains

You know what is truly evil? The hectic-ness of the holiday season. I truly enjoy Christmas and pay homage to the idea that “it’s the most wonderful time of the year,” but sometimes, like today for example – it can all feel too overwhelming. I love my Star Wars Christmas tree – I think it’s awesome and I want to share its out-of-this-world awesomeness with everyone…but putting together the posts I had outlined on Day 1 (or 8, depending how you’re counting) is the glob of icing on my proverbial stress-cake…and though it shames me to say this – I am not going to manage to write all my posts…at least, not as I had originally planned.

Yesterday I only managed to briefly introduce 3 of the heroes that grace my tree (sorry,  I know you were all waiting for bikini Leia). I had planned to present ALL of them, from the aforementioned Her Royal Hotness with Jabba-choking chain in hand to a little green Yoda standing by a swamp tree. Today my slacking gets even worse – I’m going to really wimp out and just post one villain…

Mr Big Bad Baddy: The Emperor
You know you’re a bad dude when Darth Vader refers to you as “less forgiving” than he is himself.  Sitting on this throne, I suppose the Emperor thinks he’s large and in charge, but something about this ornament strikes me as silly…like he’s riding in an overgrown amusement park ride…or sitting in one of those motorized baby swings.

So, sorry – just 1 villain is all you’re gettin’. I suppose if there were hundreds (ok, fine 1 or 2) comments gushing about the wonder of a Star Wars Christmas then perhaps I would feel more pressured (obligated?) to stick to my initial intentions.  If a quiet lurker who has been enjoying the ride somewhere out there in a galaxy far far away is reading this…well, I apologize. Here’s my band-aid solution: there are many Christmas seasons to come – so instead of introducing my entire collection this year. I will come back December after December and add a bit more to each day’s post.  I can handle that much (I think).

And since so much of the holidays are about anticipation – what beats waiting an entire year to see what I will choose to showcase next?

So there, I release myself from the guilt of an obligation left unfulfilled.

Now if I could only stop feeling bad about slacking on this year’s Christmas cards.

Come back tomorrow when I will (maybe…) post a bit about the sidekicks of the series.

R-2 fans, this one will be for you.

Star Wars Christmas Day 7: Heroes

When it comes down to it, the Star Wars saga is all about making sure that in the end, the good guys (and gals) win. Over the course of the series, many heroes stepped up to the plate to do their part, and have now found a place of honor on my Christmas tree: immortalized in all their butt-kicking, light saber swinging, bikini-wearing glory.

Qui-Gon: The Noble Rebel
"Old" Obi-Wan, Ben Kenobi: the Mentor
I realized most of my Luke Ornaments are from Empire Strikes Back...I need a Luke from Episode IV, or what some of us still like to call the first movie.

That’s a start on the good guys…more to come, but if I wanted to keep my promise and get this out on time, it will have to be as is…
